Weekend Mini-cation to Kansas and Missouri

Last weekend we took a trip to Kansas to see family... thanks to Dad for this happy picture.

Then we hit the road and headed over to Springfield, Missouri to see... more family! We stayed up late talking about autonomous lawnmowers and childhood and baby Hope who's on her way, we ate way too much at Ihop, we lounged around in the lake and watched Anthony do backflips, we rode rides and ate peanut clusters at Silver Dollar City, and we oohed and awed at the general beauty of the Ozarks.

We had a great time. Next month... to Utah to spend time with family there as we start to make our way to California!

Jake the Wasps-in-the-Mailbox Hero

Jake was my hero the other day. I went to the mailbox to retrieve the package we'd just received and reached in only to realized there was a wasp nest inside with wasps swarming all over. Yikes! So I did what I'd recommend to any girl who finds herself in this situation... I screamed and ran away. Then I called Jake (in the apartment) from the mailbox (just outside). Here's what happened next:

So thanks to Jake, our package is safe. He also knocked out the nest so the wasps won't plague our neighbors, either. Who knows what we'll find in the mailbox next week...

Renaissance Weekend in Grand Teton National Park

We took a road trip over the Fourth of July Weekend up to Jackson, Wyoming and Grand Teton National Park to attend Renaissance Weekend, a weekend retreat where folks come in from across the country to share stories and develop friendships.

We started our trip at 3:31am. (Jake was so excited for the road trip that he couldn't sleep.)

We rolled into the Jackson Lake Lodge around noon, after stopping at roadside attractions along the way such as lively Dubois, Wyoming (who knew?) and this store in Jackson with "everything moose." I searched for t-shirts with 4 moose ladies on them, but alas, I couldn't find any.

The weekend was inspiring. We met a bunches of interesting people, learned more than we could have imagined, shared time and meals with good friends (hi Nelson!), and made new friends who I think we'll stay connected with for years to come.

Jake taught little kids about artificial intelligence and spoke to adults about his experience with religion, I spoke about effective marketing, and we both talked about the future of technology. We ran into former Googlers we'd lost touch with and met people from industries we didn't know existed.

On top of all that, we got to explore the breathtaking Grand Teton National Park via driving and hiking and we took a star tour where we watched the Milky Way in all its glory while hearing stories about the mythology of the stars and gasping at the sight of a shooting star every so often.

While Jake and I were enjoying the weekend, Esmeralda spent her holiday frolicking with the pollen. So I guess she had fun, too.

We were sad to miss out on sharing your birthday with you, Beth. And we were also disappointed to miss the historic Potwin Fourth of July celebrations. But considering we weren't in those places, we did have a lovely time.

Happy Birthday, Beth! and Happy Fourth of July, America!

Happy Wedding, George and Lin!

Late last month we ventured to the Bay Area to attend our friend George and Lin's wedding out in the woods in Los Gatos. George and Lin both looked fantastic and they had a lovely ceremony with personal, creative vows under gigantic redwood trees.

Congratulations George and Lin!

For us the event was doubly wonderful - in addition to getting to see George and Lin marry each other and help them celebrate the special day, it was also an iGoogle reunion of sorts for us. Ryo, Kai, Ingrid, Tyler, Steve, so many ex-iGooglers, oh my!

While in this foreign land, we also found ourselves at Pizza My Heart in Sunnyvale with our SnapJoy friends Michael, JP, and Adriana. Unfortunately I didn't snap a photo of the group, but I did get a couple of this amazing contraption they had there.

Let me preface this by saying that I realize that this is my 2nd Coke-related post in a month. And yet this seems so worth it. It's a coke machine that mixes your Coke for you on the spot. As a result, you can get over 100 different flavors. Cherry Vanilla Coke Zero? No problem. Raspberry Diet Coke? Sure. Amazing! The future is here. (No Beverly, though.)

We also had a wonderful time with Beth during our stay. I thought this fruit bowl she prepared for us was so beautiful, I couldn't help but snap a picture.

California, get ready to see a whole lot more of us next month!
